¿Truco o Trato?

Originalmente era una leyenda de origen céltica según la cual los espíritus de los difuntos y toda clase de entes procedentes de todos los reinos espirituales eran libres de vagar por la Tierra la noche de Halloween. Entre ellos estaba Jack O'Lantern, que iba de casa en casa pidiendo 'Truco o Trato'. La leyenda asegura que lo mejor era hacer 'trato', sin importar el costo que este tuviera, pues de no pactar con este espíritu él usaría sus poderes para hacer 'truco', que consistiría en en maldecir la casa y a sus habitantes, dándoles toda clase de infortunios y maldiciones. Como protección surgió la idea de crear en las calabazas formas horrendas.

Actualmente es un juego infantil que los niños practican encantados debido a los dulces y golosinas que reciben.

¿Por qué se piden golosinas en Halloween?

Aunque no hay fuentes que lo documenten, se cree que la antecesora de esta tradición es La Fiesta de San Martín, que se celebra en zonas de Flandes y de los Países Bajos en la que los niños cantan una canción típica de la festividad en la puerta de las casas y se les recompensa con golosinas.

La Calabaza

La tradición de tallar calabazas viene de una leyenda celta sobre Stingy Jack (Jack 'el tacaño'). Era un granjero que engañaba y mentía a vecinos y amigos, lo cual, le dio la reputación de una persona tan malvada que Satanás acudió a comprobarlo y Jack le acabó engañando hasta el punto de creer que cuando muriera iría al cielo, pero debido a su maldad y al pacto que hizo con Satanás de que nunca pudiera reclamar su alma para llevársela al infierno, no pudo ir a ninguno de los dos sitios y fue condenado a vagar con un nabo hueco con un carbón ardiendo dentro como única luz que iluminara su eterno vagar. Con el paso del tiempo fue llamado 'Jack of the Lantern' (Jack el de la linterna) que se abrevió a Jack O'Lantern.

Actualmente, se utilizan calabazas porque son más grandes y fáciles de tallar. El motivo de decorar las casas con dicha figura es para evitar que Jack llame a la puerta.

Halloween

La palabra 'Halloween' es una derivación de la expresión inglesa All Hallow's Eve (Día de Todos los Santos). Principalmente se celebra en Canadá, Estados Unidos, Irlanda y el Reino Unido, aunque, actualmente se celebra hasta en Japón.

Hace más de 2.500 años, cuando terminaba el año celta al final del verano, 31 de octubre en nuestro calendario, el ganado era llevado de los prados a los establos, al creer que ese día los espíritus podían salir de los cementerios y apoderarse de los cuerpos de los vivos, los celtas ensuciaban las casa y las decoraban con huesos y calaveras para que los muertos pasaran de largo asustados. De ahí viene la tradición de decorar la casa con motivos siniestros.

La fiesta fue exportada a USA principalmente por irlandeses más o menos hacia 1846 y ha llegado al resto del mundo a través de películas americanas.

Especial Halloween

Con motivo de la celebración de Halloween, he decidido modificar el diseño y la música del blog para ponerlo acorde con la fecha, aunque sólo estará así los días 31 de octubre y 1 de noviembre para después volver a como estaba anteriormente.

Respecto a la música, he puesto 4 canciones: 'Les Memoires Blessees' de Dark Sanctuary, 'Red Mist' de Jim Dooley, 'True' y 'Promise (reprise)' ambas de Akira Yamaoka que les sonará a los fans del videojuego Silent Hill. Cada vez que entréis comenzará a sonar una de ellas al azar.

Walter Lewin

Walter Lewin nació en los Países Bajos en 1936. Estudió física nuclear en la Universidad Técnica de Delft y recibió su doctorado en 1965. Entró como profesor de física en el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) en 1966 y aunque solo pensaba quedarse un año, sigue dando clase allí.

Ha ganado numerosos premios pero, una de las mejores características de el profesor Lewin, es su forma de dar las clases. En ellas no duda en poner a prueba las leyes de la física con el objetivo de que sus alumnos mantengan el interés y aprendan. En definitiva, un profesor al que realmente le gusta enseñar y de los que ya casi no quedan.

Nueva Etiqueta: People

Añado una nueva etiqueta que se llamará 'People', todas las entradas de este blog que lleven dicha etiqueta, serán sobre las personas que me impresionan y a las que admiro, sobretodo, por sus conocimientos y habilidades. 

A algunos ya los conoceréis y no os parecerán una novedad, pero otros aún están por descubrir. No creo que tenga muchas entradas en esta etiqueta, ya que, es difícil que alguien consiga impresionarme mucho, pero os aseguro que serán personas realmente increíbles.

Glóbulo blanco cazando a una bacteria

El siguiente vídeo fue tomado por David Rogers a finales de los 50 en la universidad de Vanderbilt. En el vídeo podemos apreciar cómo en una muestra de sangre un glóbulo blanco consigue darle caza a una bacteria, concretamente un staphylococcus aureus, abriéndose paso por entre los glóbulos rojos.

Pasquín

Así se llama al escrito anónimo que se fija en un sitio público, con expresiones satíricas contra el gobierno o contra una persona o corporación determinada. Es un término de origen italiano y alude al nombre de una estatua -la de Pasquino, situada cerca de la plaza Navona, en Roma-, en cuyo torso solían fijarse los libelos y escritos críticos contra las autoridades o contra el mismísimo papa. 

El primer pasquín iba dirigido a Urbano VIII por haber mandado fundir piezas artísticas de bronce para fabricar cañones.
